On 4th of February, 2026, the residents of Jos, the Plateau State capital in Nigeria, were treated to an unusual sight in the morning skies, as a rare optical display formed around the sun, drawing attention across the city.
The phenomenon, visible for several minutes after sunrise, appeared as a bright ring and shimmering patterns surrounding the sun, prompting many residents to stop and capture the moment on their phones.
Experts say such displays are caused by sunlight interacting with ice crystals high in the atmosphere, bending and reflecting light in striking ways – with beautiful colours like an ‘aurora’ of sorts. A once in a life time sight to behold!
